Joint Replacement Surgery
Joint replacements is one of the most common and successful
operations in modern orthopaedic surgery. It consists of replacing
a painful, arthritic, worn or damaged joint with artificial surfaces
shaped into such a way as to allow joint movement. There are a
number of joint replacement procedures but the most common are
those involving hips and knees.
Total joint replacement involves a major surgical procedure but
is generally very successful. There are known complications of
the procedure including infection; blood clots, loosening of the
prosthesis; wear of the new joint and nerve injury.
Occasionally problems arise following total joint replacement
that are a result of errors in medical or surgical procedure rather
than the inherent risks of the operation itself. Problems can
occur because an inappropriate prosthesis was used or because
of poor surgical technique.
The consequences of errors in joint replacement surgery can
be significant. A patient may find that their mobility is severely
restricted or they may require further revision surgery to rectify
the problem.
