Failure of GP to diagnose and treat appropriately
The vast majority of minor ailments and chronic complaints may
be managed on a day to day basis by a patient’s GP. Generally
this is a very effective way for patients to access treatment
and support.
On occasions, however, GPs may fail to discharge these requirements.
A GP may fail to diagnose a condition that should have been
obvious from the presenting complaints. As a result patients may
be denied the necessary treatment and suffer pain and discomfort
as a result.
Occasionally GPs may fail to discharge their monitoring functions.
For example, they may fail to carry out appropriate routine medical
checks or may fail to report the results of abnormal tests, leaving
the patient unaware of the consequences.
GPs may also make errors in prescribing, resulting in patients
taking inappropriate medication or suffering underdose or overdose.
