Undiagnosed Fractures
Improved x-ray and scanning techniques mean that most bone fractures
are identified and treated appropriately. Even where minor and
displaced fractures are not identified it is often the case that
the patient makes a good recovery without further intervention.
Problems can arise where an incorrect diagnosis is made and
the patient is not able to access crucial treatment before the
bone begins to set. In some cases the bone can begin to set in
the wrong position and this can result in deformity and permanent
disability.
In some cases it may be possible for the bone to be re-broken
and then pinned into position but this is rarely as successful
as timely and appropriate treatment in the days after an injury
occurs.
Failure to diagnose a fracture that occurs within a joint can
result in serious complications such as arthritis or permanent
joint stiffness.
